Conventional floating rotors rely on circular rivets that fight the rotor blade as heat cycles cause it to expand and contract, leading to distortion, brake pulsation, and premature failure. EBC Racing's SD-System replaces that round rivet with a square-sided button that lets the blade move freely in every direction, preserving a perfectly flat, true rotor surface for the life of the disc.
The square drive difference. Round buttons make point contact with the rotor blade. Under repeated heat cycles, that point contact allows the blade to work loose in the drive direction, introducing slop that causes vibration, rotor throw-out, and the spongy pedal feel that signals a distorted disc. The SD-System's square-sided button transmits braking forces across a full line contact, maintaining close tolerances in the drive direction far longer than a conventional floating rotor can.
Unrestricted thermal expansion. As a rotor heats up, the blade expands radially inward toward the hub. A circular button blocks that inward movement and bends the blade sideways, which is exactly how brake pulsation starts. The square button geometry allows the blade to expand and contract in both directions without interference, so the rotor stays geometrically true regardless of speed or thermal load.
Extended service life by design. Because the blade never distorts and the button never works loose, the practical replacement triggers for an SD-equipped rotor are limited to impact damage or, over a very extended mileage interval, reaching the minimum wear threshold. That is a fundamentally different service profile from a conventional floating rotor that can warp and require replacement well before wear limits are reached.
