The Steeda Tri-Ax shifter has always led the way in performance. With this latest revision the evolution of this shifter continues for the 2005-2010 Mustang GT, and is the best version yet!

The factory steel mounting rail is replaced with a substantial billet beam for more positive location; and upgraded rear mounting bushings are supplied to further reduce deflection under hard shifting. The shifter base, handle, and beam are all CNC machined by Steeda from 6061 aluminum.

For the ultimate in accuracy and precision, the internal shift lever mechanism now pivots off a high quality spherical bearing that has been thoroughly tested to insure it withstands our standard of 1.5 million+ shifts without failure. Our 2 position handle height, a Steeda exclusive allows you to tailor the shifter for the best combination of throw length and comfortable reach.

I am not a performance driver anymore. These days my Mustang is my daily driver and weekend cruiser. So my needs in a short throw shifter are somewhat different than those of most enthusiasts. I wanted a shifter with a somewhat shorter throw than stock but still long enough for my relaxed shifting style. But most of all, the shifter had to be as quiet as stock. I tried one of the very expensive performance shifters and liked the shorter throw but hated the amount of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) that it introduced, so after about a month I went back to the shop and had them reinstall the stock shifter. I found out later that the NVH problem was due to damage caused by an improper installation so I don't know what it would have been like had it been properly installed.

Once back to using the stock shifter, I realized how much I still wanted a shorter throw but without the NVH so I started asking around and came to the conclusion that the Steeda Short Throw Shifter might be my best option. After some conversation with the helpful people at Steeda, I ordered and received their shifter. I had a different shop do the installation this time. Driving away after the installation, I noticed an immediate difference that brought a grin to my face. This shifter was exactly what I was looking for! It has a nice throw that is shorter than stock but not too extreme. It has very precise movement and best of all, it is just as quiet as the stock shifter! There is a slight click as it is pulled into each gear that is more felt than heard and is a reassuring confirmation that you are in the gear. The reverse lockout is positive without requiring too much effort (I had expected I would want to switch to the included lighter spring but decided it wasn't necessary once I tried it).

I can't say how it would do in performance use since that's not my style but if you are looking for a reasonably priced quality shifter with great feel and no added noise then the Steeda shifter is a great choice. I could not be more pleased!

Product Benefits
  • Superior, patented Steeda technology!
  • Prevent damage to the transmission and linkage under hard usage
  • Never miss 3rd gear!
  • No complicated, unnecessary adjustments unlike competitive designs
  • Proper shorter throw engineered to make shifting easy, unlike other extremely short shifters that end up increasing shift effort making shifting more difficult and uncomfortable
  • No rubber used on main shifter shaft to wear out and cover up NVH
  • 3 lbs lighter than other (so-called) competing brands (Weight is the enemy of performance.)
  • Natural shifting feel, not awkward to shift like other brands
  • No nylon bushing used in pivot to wear out like competitors. Tri-Ax was tested to 1.5 million shifts with no measurable wear!

Outstanding upgrade!
This is one of the best upgrades I've done to my Stang! Solid, well made, smooth, looks great! Takes a moment to get used to the positive feedback compared to stock when grabbing gears. Completely changed the feel of the car. Especially through the first few gears! 1st to 2nd is clean, crisp and fun. 2nd to 3rd is effortless and smooth. Love the reverse lockout from 5th. The instructions are pretty straightforward. Albeit they're a bit dated and the shifter has changed some. MAKE SURE you don't miss the step of stretching the lower boot over the shifter as it's not emphasized heavily. As mentioned in previous reviews, the thread pitch doesnt match all stock shift knobs. I bought the aluminum shift lever with shift ball which gives the option to use 2 thread pitches simply by switching out the arm. Shifts beautifully and effortlessly with the extended arm. Brings the shift knob location back and up just enough to be PERFECT! You can make the throw very short by lowering the small arm down fully, but I highly recommend using the longer Steeda arm all the way up. Just like butter. You wont regret the purchase. Especially if you appreciate a great positive feel from gear to gear. The machined bezel around the top of the shift housing on mine was put on backwards, but has a clear indication arrow pointing front so very easily corrected. If it comes all together, you'll save a ton of time by disassembling it a bit. 30 min install. Took more time to set up than it did to actually install. Treat yourself, you won't regret it! Babe safe, use jackstands, dont bother with dropping the driveshaft. Its unnecessary unless you're rocking some Hogan pythons. Very pleased! (Excuse the car, was in mid deep clean rebuild)

Great Shifter! A couple issues.
The shifter works great! It makes such a difference that it felt like I have a new transmission. It feels very precise, and the throw length is just right. As advertised, the 2-3 shift works solidly.A couple small gripes (which I got over). I thought that the installation instructions were garbage. They actually made it harder to install than just winging it.The threads on the new shifter handle are different than the stock shifter. I didn't see this before, and ended up re-tapping (M12 x 1.75) my old ones to fit. When you order this, consider the package that includes the knob.

Money very well spent.
I didn't buy this to go racing, although I went last weekend and it's fantastic! Most of my driving is on curvy country roads, and just dropping down into third for a sweeping bend or second for a sharper corner is a joy. Snick, snick..up, down. It just feels so precise. Money very well spent.

Best shifter ever!
I have had the Tri-Ax shifter in all my stangs and have never had any issues what so ever. I did the install with the front jacked up and the drive shaft not removed and whole install didn't take but maybe 3-3 1/2 hours. If you have the ability to do it on a lift I would recomend it. All in all, great shifter for the money.

The Hard Way
Okay, so I know the instructions said to remove the drive shaft - that it is not recommended to try it with the drive shaft in place - BUT - I had a bit more time available that particular Saturday... Once the transmission link was removed, the factory shifter came out easily. 1. First I installed the arm piece separately. 2. Then shifter body can be worked in from inside the car. 3. Then I bolted in the rear two bolts holding the insulated (red bushings) bar. 4. Connecting the arm to the shifter body was tricky. You have to be good at using feel rather than sight to do it this way, but it worked! 5. I used a feeler gauge 0.025 per instructions to set my stop for 3rd gear and 2nd/4th stops. My almost impossible & under-load 3rd gear is much more manageable. It feels nice and tight - like a new car!

Best Shifter for the S197!
I purchased this shifter in 2006 and have had it on my 2006 Mustang GT since then. It is still running great and I still love it! It really shortened the throw, improved the feeling (it's not mushy like the stock shifter was), and also really helps having that spring-assist for shifts to third. It's just a well-built part and it's all made in the USA to boot! Can't beat it!

Built to last
Hello, I have a 2006 Mustang GT. I have owned my Tri-ax for about 4 years and can honestly say I am satisfied with my product. The difference between stock and the Tri-ax are literally night and day. One thing to mention after having it for so long it starts to feel stock as in the shorter throw becomes more natural and right feeling and you almost want it to be even shorter. This is to be expected with any product you own. Superchargers will start feeling not enough etc, just a natural cause of our being. I did compare this with other brands on the market at the time (MGW was not made then) and I still am confident in my decision. It's sturdy, and seems built to last. For any 05-10 in the market for a shifter, I wouldn't pass this one up. -Kal
