Use the calculator above to estimate the correct speedometer gear for a mechanical speedometer application. Work through the inputs in order, then review the result and fitment notes before ordering a gear.

  1. Select the Transmission Type

    Choose Manual or Automatic. This selection is included for fitment reference and does not change the calculation by itself.

  2. Select the Speedometer Drive Gear Teeth

    Find the Mustang or transmission setup that most closely matches the car, then select the typical drive gear tooth count shown in the chart. Because swaps, rebuilds, and previous conversions can change the internal gear, verify the installed part whenever possible.

  3. Select the Rear Axle Gear Ratio

    Choose the rear gear ratio currently installed in the Mustang, such as 3.55, 3.73, or 4.10. Use the actual ring-and-pinion ratio, not a planned future ratio.

  4. Choose a Tire Input Method

    Use Tire Size when you know the sidewall size, or switch to Manual Diameter when you have a measured tire diameter or a tire manufacturer's published specification.

  5. Select the Tire Width, Aspect Ratio, and Wheel Diameter

    Read the three values from the tire sidewall. For example, a 275/40R17 uses 275 mm width, a 40% aspect ratio, and a 17-inch wheel. The calculator displays the estimated tire diameter as the selections change.

How the Mustang Speedometer Gear Calculator Works

A mechanical Mustang speedometer uses a drive gear inside the transmission and a removable driven gear attached to the speedometer cable or vehicle speed sensor. When you change rear gears or tire diameter, the relationship between driveshaft speed and vehicle speed changes. That can cause the speedometer to read too fast or too slow.

This calculator uses three user-selected inputs:

Drive Gear TeethThe number of teeth on the transmission's internal speedometer drive gear.

Rear Gear RatioThe Mustang's rear axle ratio, such as 2.73, 3.08, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, or 4.30.

Tire Size or Tire DiameterThe rear tire size determines tire revolutions per mile. A shorter tire spins more times per mile, while a taller tire spins fewer times per mile.

The speedometer calibration is fixed at 1,000 cable revolutions per mile and does not require a separate input.

Driven gear teeth (Drive gear teeth × rear gear ratio × tire revolutions per mile) ÷ 1,000

The calculator works backward from the target speedometer revolutions per mile to determine the driven gear tooth count. Because physical driven gears use whole teeth and not every tooth count is available, the exact result is a target, since you won't be able to always buy an exact matching gear. The calculator compares that target with the Steeda gears mapped to the selected transmission and recommends the closest available option.

Treat the available-gear recommendation as a selection aid instead of an automatic fitment answer. Confirm the gear construction and transmission compatibility before ordering or installing the part.


Common Mustang Speedometer Gear Inputs

For many Fox Body and SN95 Mustang applications, the most common speedometer drive gears are 6-tooth, 7-tooth, and 8-tooth gears. The correct selection depends on the transmission and whether the internal drive gear has been changed.

Important Fitment Notes

Speedometer gear correction depends on the Mustang's model year, transmission, rear gear ratio, and speedometer type.

On many older mechanical speedometer applications, the driven gear can be changed after a rear gear or tire size change. Later Mustangs with electronic speedometers may require a tuner or electronic calibration device instead of a physical speedometer gear.

Verify the Installed Transmission and Drive Gear

Confirm the transmission model and internal drive gear tooth count. Do not rely on the shifter type or original build sheet alone. Transmission swaps and rebuilds may change the drive gear or speed-sensor arrangement from the Mustang's original specification.

Review 23-Tooth Gear Compatibility

A 23-tooth driven gear deserves extra compatibility review and may not be the best long-term solution for every transmission. Verify the application before ordering or installing the gear.

Confirm the Driven Gear Design

Check the gear color, tooth count, shaft style, rotation or hand, and sensor compatibility against the product's fitment information before installation.

Know Whether the Speedometer Is Mechanical or Electronic

Many later electronic-speedometer Mustangs require PCM tuning or an electronic correction device instead of a physical driven gear.


When You Need Speedometer Correction

Any drivetrain or tire change that alters the relationship between road speed and the speedometer signal may require correction.

After Changing the Rear Gear Ratio

Installing numerically higher or lower rear gears changes driveshaft speed relative to vehicle speed and commonly requires recalibrating the speedometer.

After Changing Tire Diameter

Taller or shorter rear tires—and tire-and-wheel packages with a different overall diameter—change tire revolutions per mile and can make the speedometer read high or low.

After a Transmission or Drive Gear Change

A transmission swap or different internal speedometer drive gear can change the required driven gear, even when the rear axle ratio and tire size stay the same.

After a Speedometer-System Conversion

Converting between mechanical and electronic speedometer systems may require a different correction method, such as PCM tuning or an electronic calibration device.

If the speedometer reads faster than the actual road speed, the setup is over-reporting vehicle speed. If it reads slower than the actual road speed, the setup is under-reporting vehicle speed.
