Conventional floating rotors rely on circular rivets that fight the natural expansion of the rotor blade under heat, creating the conditions for distortion, brake pulsation, and eventual rotor loosening. EBC Racing's SD-System replaces that circular rivet with a square-sided button, letting the rotor blade expand and contract freely in both directions without binding against the hub.
The physics of square drive. As a rotor heats under braking, the blade expands and then contracts radially inward toward the hub. A circular button contacts the blade at a single point during that movement, progressively tightening its grip and distorting the rotor sideways. The square-sided SD button allows the blade to move inward and outward without restriction, keeping the rotor perfectly flat and true throughout its full thermal cycle.
Line contact versus point contact in the drive direction. Braking forces are transmitted through the button from the rotor blade to the inner hub. A circular button transfers those forces at a single point, which wears over time and introduces rotor-to-hub slackness. That slackness builds into rotor shake and, in extreme cases, rotor throw-out at speed. The square-sided SD button transmits braking forces across an entire line of contact on its flat face, maintaining close tolerances between blade and hub over a far longer service life.
Extended rotor service life. Because the SD-System eliminates the root causes of distortion and drive-direction wear, EBC estimates that an SD-equipped rotor can last five to ten times longer than a conventional floating rotor built with circular buttons. Replacement becomes necessary only after impact damage or wear limits reached over a very extended mileage interval.
Fitment-specific left-hand disc ring. This is the replacement rotor blade for the driver-side front position on 2015-2023 Mustang 5.0L applications. It pairs with the corresponding SD inner hat assembly and retains all SD-System square-drive button geometry.
Product Benefits
- Square-Drive SD-System: Square-sided buttons allow unrestricted radial expansion of the rotor blade, preventing heat-induced distortion and brake pulsation.
- Line-Contact Force Transmission: Flat button faces spread braking forces across a full line of contact, reducing button wear and maintaining hub-to-blade tolerances.
- Eliminates Rotor Tightening: Blade expands inward and outward without binding the hub, preserving rotor geometry at any speed or load.
- Extended Service Life: Designed to last five to ten times longer than conventional circular-button floating rotors under normal use.
- Prevents Rotor Throw-Out: Close drive-direction tolerances are maintained long-term, eliminating the slackness that leads to severe vibration at speed.
- Direct Replacement: Left-hand front disc ring sized specifically for 2015-2023 Mustang 5.0L floating rotor assemblies.
About EBC Racing: EBC Brakes manufactures friction and rotor products across a range of compounds and constructions, serving everything from street performance to dedicated racing applications. The SD-System floating rotor line reflects EBC's focus on solving the mechanical failure modes of conventional floating rotor designs rather than simply copying them.
