Square drive geometry solves a fundamental problem. As a rotor blade heats up under hard braking, it expands and contracts both radially and across its bandwidth. A circular button resists that movement, pinching the blade and forcing it to distort sideways. The square-sided SD button allows the blade to move inward and outward without restraint, so the rotor stays perfectly flat and true at any speed or load condition.
Line contact replaces point contact in the drive direction. Under braking torque, a circular button transmits force through a single point of contact. Over extended use, that point contact wears and allows the rotor blade to develop slackness relative to the inner hub, which can progress to rotor throw-out and severe vibration at speed. The SD button's flat side spans the full edge of the drive surface, spreading that force across a line contact and maintaining close tolerances over a far longer service life.
Dramatically extended rotor service life. Because the blade is free to expand and contract without distortion, and because drive forces are spread rather than concentrated, the primary reasons a rotor wears out prematurely are removed. EBC Racing notes that an SD-equipped rotor can last five to ten times as long as a conventional floating rotor built with circular buttons, with replacement ultimately driven by impact damage or exceeding wear limits over a very extended mileage.
