Square drive geometry solves the core problem of floating rotor design. As a rotor heats up, the blade expands and contracts radially. Circular buttons resist that movement, loading the blade sideways and causing the pulsation or spongy pedal feel that plagues conventional two-piece rotors. The square-sided SD button lets the blade expand and contract without restraint, keeping the rotor perfectly true and flat across the full temperature range.
Line contact replaces point contact in the drive direction. Under hard braking, braking torque transfers from the blade to the hub through the button faces. A circular rivet transfers that force through a single point of contact; wear accumulates there until the blade develops play relative to the hub. The square SD button transfers force along an entire flat face, distributing the load and maintaining tight tolerances far longer. Slackness in the drive direction is one of the primary causes of rotor throw-out and high-speed vibration; the SD-System addresses that failure mode directly.
