Stock floating rotors rely on circular rivets that fight the rotor blade as heat cycles cause it to expand and contract, leading to distortion, brake pulsation, and premature failure. EBC Racing's SD-System replaces that circular rivet with a square-sided button that lets the blade move freely in every direction, eliminating the root cause of conventional floating rotor problems on your 2012-2017 Fiesta ST MK7.
Square drive geometry solves a fundamental problem. As a rotor blade heats up, it expands and contracts radially. A circular button pinches the blade during this movement, distorting it sideways and producing the spongy pedal feel or pulsation that plagues track-driven cars. The square-sided SD button allows unrestricted inward and outward movement, so the rotor stays perfectly true and flat through every heat cycle regardless of speed or braking load.
Line contact replaces point contact under braking forces. A circular rivet transmits braking torque through a single point of contact on its edge. Over extended use, that point contact wears, introducing rotational slop between the blade and hub that can escalate into rotor throw-out and severe vibrations at speed. The flat side of the SD button spreads that same load across a full line of contact, maintaining close tolerances far longer and keeping the assembly tight through the life of the disc.
Extended service life is a direct consequence of the design. Because distortion failures and drive-direction slop are both addressed, the primary reasons a conventional floating rotor wears out early are removed. EBC Racing rates SD-equipped rotors to last up to five to ten times longer than conventional units built with circular buttons, with replacement only required after impact damage or rotor wear limits reached over a very extended mileage accumulation.
This listing is for the right-side front disc ring only. The SD-Rotor ring installs onto a compatible floating hub, replacing only the blade when wear or damage demands it, so the inner hub can be retained and reused.
Product Benefits
- Square-Sided SD Button: Allows unrestricted radial expansion and contraction of the rotor blade, preventing distortion and pulsation.
- Line Contact Load Transfer: Spreads braking torque across a flat surface rather than a single point, maintaining tight rotor-to-hub tolerances over time.
- Eliminates Rotor Throw-Out Risk: Close drive-direction tolerances are preserved far longer than with conventional circular rivets.
- Rotor Stays True: Blade remains flat and undistorted throughout its full life cycle, contributing to consistent pedal feel.
- Extended Service Life: Rated to last up to five to ten times longer than conventional floating rotors under comparable use.
- Replacement Ring Only: Front right disc ring replaces the blade independently, allowing hub reuse and reducing replacement cost.
- Direct Fitment: Engineered specifically for the 2012-2017 Fiesta ST MK7 front axle.
About EBC Racing: EBC Brakes manufactures performance brake components including pads, rotors, and brake lines across a wide range of motorsport and street applications. The Racing division develops competition-focused hardware such as the SD-System floating rotor line, applying motorsport engineering principles to platforms including the Fiesta ST.
