If you have an aftermarket cold air intake, odds have it that you need to service your reusable air filter. Today, we’re going to show you how often to do it and a step by step on how to clean it. Check it out All right. Jamie, how do you know that you would need to clean your air filter in the first place? Well, most of the reusable cleanable air filters are going to be made out of a cloth gauze type material, and they'll have a steel screen mesh surrounding the filter itself to kind of hold it in shape because the material doesn't have it doesn't keep form. And the stainless steel mesh keeps it in shape. So you can look at them and tell you that this is a reusable filter. So with that said, how often would somebody look to clean one of these air filters? Between every 15,000 and 20,000 miles. Unless you're doing something with your car, that's going to get it dirtier faster if you offroad with it. Pickup trucks, dirt roads, farm use, they're going to get dirty faster. Some of the racetrack activities we do, they get dirty pretty quick and we service them just according to how dirty they get. But the normal interval is about 15 to 20000 miles. so we do offer an S&B cleaning kit for your air filter when it does need to be serviced. Jamie, what all is included in this kit? It comes with with a cleaning solution, just a strong detergent and new oil. Aside from the S&B cleaning kit, Jamie, what else would you need in your home garage to take care of this on your own? Just the basic hand tools you would need to get the filter off. Most of these are eight millimeter hex hose clamp type fitting. You can use a flat blade screwdriver if you can reach it, remove the air filter, and from there you're just going to need a bucket of ordinary tap water. We have our 2015 EcoBoost Mustang here. We're going to be removing the filter off of our Steeda cold air intake. It’s a 5/16th socket to remove it. You could tell that this filter is pretty darn dirty. It’s seen a lot of miles both on track and on the street. Definitely needs to be cleaned. Go ahead and set the hose clamp aside. Grab your S&B cleaning fluid and spray down the entire outside of the filter. This cleaning solution actually does include a degreaser because you're actually removing the oil in addition to the dirt. When you're cleaning your filter. Make sure to get it properly saturated. Set the cleaning solution aside and submerge it in the water kind of rinse it out. You'll see the water go from clear to dirty because it's removing all the dirt and grime from the intake. And depending on how dirty your filter is, you may actually need to do this a couple times. Make sure to examine each of the grooves, make sure there's no junk or dirt or anything left behind. Don't forget to do the inside as well. At this point, let the filter completely drain out and you can set it aside to dry. You want to make sure that the filter is completely dry before you move on to the next step. Depending on your climate, this could take a couple hours or as much as 8 to 12. But again, make sure it is completely dry before you move on to oiling the filter. We do highly recommend to let the filter air dry. The reason for that is you don't want to use compressed air and poke a hole in the media or a blow dryer or heat gun. The best way to do this is to let it air dry. We now have a dry filter. Jamie, let's oil this thing. All right, you don't want to use too much oil. Saturating it with too much oil it can get in the mass airflow sensor. And that can do all kind of bad things for the drivability of the car. You want to start at the top and just run a line of oil all the way across and you're going to let it let gravity do its thing. You're going to let gravity take over and the oil will slowly work its way down the air filter You may have to do this two or three times as it works its way down. Just run another line. Let it keep soaking down. If you over oil it and you know that you've over oiled it, just re-clean it The cool thing is the filter itself obviously is a gray color. After it's cleaned, you can do different color oils as well. We also offer a red kit as well as a blue kit, depending on your taste or your motif of the car. So we went with the blue here to get it matching like the original blue filter that we had on this EcoBoost long ago. As you can see, it's an extremely easy process. If you are impatient, just pick up two filters, swap the new one in, clean the old filter. And that way you can just keep rotating as you drive your car. Hit that like and subscribe button, the notification bell, and don't forget the most important thing. Speed matters.
