1993 Ford Mustang Specs & Details

The final year of the Fox Body Mustang goes out with more of a bang than a whimper. Sales were up over 45 percent from the previous year due to several factors. The economy returned to normalcy, and Ford debuted some respectable Mustang variants. These Cobra special editions not only helped boost numbers but also reignited interest in a Mustang that had gotten stale years ago. Arguably, some buyers also picked up a Fox Body for nostalgia reasons.

1993 Mustang

The most significant limited-run Mustang for 1993 is the SVT Cobra. In addition to a unique front fascia and exclusive seven-spoke alloys, the Cobra received a modified 5.0-liter engine with GT40 heads, a reworked camshaft, and a more robust five-speed manual transmission. The result is a Mustang with 30 more horsepower and a 5 lb-ft increase in torque over the stock GT. Rear disc brakes were also added for improved stopping performance. Ford built 4,993 examples, making the SVT Cobra a rare, but not impossible to find, final-year Fox Body.

But one of the rarest Fox Bodies is the track-only SVT Cobra R. Non-essentials such as the back seat, air conditioning, and power accessories were stripped out. Engineers then added a beefed-up suspension including Koni adjustable shocks, larger brakes with vented rotors, and engine and power steering coolers. Available only in Vibrant Red, Ford built 107 examples, granting near-unicorn status to this special edition. And at $25,692 (about $49,400 today), it was the most expensive 1993 Mustang you could buy.

While less noteworthy, a limited edition version of the LX 5.0L convertible was also available (similar to what Ford offered in 1992). Buyers could choose from a Canary Yellow or Vibrant White exterior that included body-matching trim.

Outside of the Cobra special editions, the Mustang’s two engines were a carryover from earlier years. The 5.0-liter V-8 offered 205 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, with Ford finally acknowledging these lower (compared to previous years) output numbers. And base power still came from the 2.3-liter inline-four pushing out 105 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque.

Ford sold almost 57,000 LX and GT hatchbacks for the final year of the Fox Body, against about 25,000 notchback coupes and 27,000 convertibles. So, if you’re searching for a 1993 Mustang as a collectible or project, it’s safe to say you’re most likely to come across a three-door body style.
