Scott Boda with Steeda Autosports here. Today we'll be installing our S550 Steeda Tri-Ax Street Short Throw Shifter fitting all 2015-2017 Mustangs. Begin by removing the panel covers in the front of the center console, by hand. These are held in place by clips and magnets. Using a 7mm socket, remove the 4 bolts which hold the center console to the transmission tunnel. These are located in the front of the center console, under the access panels which you just removed. Unscrew and remove the shift knob. To remove the center console, open the center console storage area, and use a flat head screwdriver or a pry tool to detach the plastic center console cover. Lift the parking brake to its highest position. Detach the electrical connector or connectors underneath the cup holder and continue lifting up on the console. Use a flat head or a pry tool to release the three prongs holding the shift boot to the reverse lockout collar and then remove the center console completely. Next, you must press the factory roll pin out of the stock shifter. Put the shifter lever into first or second gear and then tap the pin out. The pin will not press out all the way. Use vise grips to pull the roll pin out the remaining distance. Once this pin is removed, remove the spring from the shifter and place the shifter in neutral. To remove the factory reverse lockout collar, use a T20 Torx Bit. Next, jack up your car and place it on jack stands. On the front of the shifter base, slide the rubber boot for the shifter linkage off the shifter base. Remove the 2 10mm nuts, securing the shifter base bushing bracket, to the chassis. Remove the 4 10mm headed bolts securing the lower shifter base cap to the shifter base. Be careful not to damage the gasket located between the lower cap and the shifter base. It will be re-used. When the lower cap is removed, the shifter linkage will be able to fall out of the shifter base. Be sure not to lose the bushing that is installed on the end of the shifter linkage. Set the linkage aside, while continuing with the removal. Remove the 2 10mm headed bolts securing the shift lever bushing support plate to the shifter base. Remove the shift lever by pulling down on the lever from underneath the car. Remove both bushing cups from the factory shift lever. Transfer both of the bushing cups over to the new Steeda shift lever. Be sure to transfer the large bushing cup first and then the small one. Make sure the bushings are greased. Install the Steeda short throw shifter in reverse order of the factory shift lever. When installing the Steeda shift lever, make sure that the threaded hole which will hold the reverse lockout collar in place, is facing the passenger side of the vehicle. Install and tighten the shift lever bushing support place to 84inch lbs. Be sure when, re-installing the shifter linkage to place both linkage bushings in their correct spots and that the lower shift lever bushing is firmly seated into the shift linkage cup. Re-install the shifter base gasket, making sure to place it back over the dowel on the rear of the shifter base. Re-install the shifter base lower cap onto the shifter base and tighten the 4 10mm headed bolts to 84 inch lbs. Re-install the shifter base bushing and mount and tighten the nuts to 97 inch lbs. Now, from inside the car, install the two supplied O-rings onto the grooves of the shift lever. Lubricate around the entire perimeter of both O-rings, making sure to get grease on both the top and bottom faces of the O-rings. This will provide a smooth function of the reverse lockout. Install the Steeda reverse lockout collar, orientated so that the vertical slots align with the Torx bolt hole. Do not apply loctite to this bolt as it could prevent smooth operation of the reverse lockout collar. Slide the spring over the shaft of the shift lever, and install the 2 supplied 4mm screws into the shift lever. Make sure both are spaced equally in the threaded holes, and tighten them down firmly. Re-install the rubber shift boot by sliding it over the reverse lockout collar, and placing it around the edges of the shifter base. Install the white factory sound deadening material around the shifter. Re-install the center console cover and make sure you plug back in the electrical connector or connectors under the cup holder. The car will not start if you do not do this. This will simply snap back into place. Then install the factory white plastic, anti-rattle washer on top of the set screws. Install the factory shifter boot and pull up the reverse lockout collar onto the top of the Steeda reverse lockout. Then tighten the 3 set screws evenly to hold the factory collar in place. Make sure they are evenly snug. This piece is Delrin and can strip easily. S o please use caution. Install the supplied rubber chord onto the threaded hole of the factory shift knob. You might need to adjust the length of this chord in order to get your gear selector pattern to line up properly. Screw the factory shift knob down onto the Steeda lever. Tighten down firmly until your shift knob aligns with the reverse lockout collar properly. Make sure not to over-tighten this piece as the plastic shift pattern emblem on the stock knob, can pop out. Re-install the 4 bolts which hold the front of the center console to the transmission tunnel and snap the front center console access panels back into place to complete the installation. This shifter will provide a 30% shorter throw and eliminate the factory shifter rattle. Congrats, you have now installed your Steeda short throw Tri-Ax sport shifter. Enjoy, and remember, when choosing Steeda, Speed Matters!

Customer Reviews

Very Happy I changed my Shifter
This Short throw shifter is 100% a must for me to have done. 30% less throw is fantastic in it self. But when I add the rear bracket from Steeda also a Must, I now have a great feel in my shifts. 3 gear is easier to hit then ever. To top everything off I add the Reverse Lock-Out Collar. This is a great set up for just doing street spirited driving. And it is an INCH shorter, great for my wrist. Love my steeda products I have used.

Great product
Installed this part because I wanted to get rid of the slop in my shifter without having to replace the entire thing. Reduced the throw and got rid of the wobble from the stock shifter.

This is a must add
Just installed this on my 2015 Ecoboost mustang. It works great. Shifts are now much more precise and confident. Topped it off with an eight ball rally stripe shift knob. I added the billet rear support with poly bushing. This is a must add since the stock one is a massively under engineered piece of junk. The install was not without it's share of expletives but when done the results are worth all the effort. Thank's Steeda for your quality and innovation.

This kit is awesome!!
The revised version has a 30% throw reduction and drops the shift knob approx. an inch. I had this installed on Saturday night and this modification became an immediate favorite. If you're like me and don't want to or need to spend the extra money on the race version short shifter kit, do yourself a favor and buy this one. The tri ax street version has become my second favorite mod right behind my tunes. The shifts are quick, precise, tight, there's no slop, very very little NVH, and the shifts just feel awesome. My knob drop is absolutely perfect as now my forearm rests on the center console area and the shifts are just a flick of the wrist basically. I also installed the clutch spring at the same time and so with the spring and the short shifter, I am loving this manual transmission. There's no need for automatic for blazing shifts. I highly recommend contacting [email protected] and buying this if you want blazing smooth shifts without spending the money on the race version. This kit is awesome!!

It's a nicely made piece, and the price is right.
It's a nicely made piece, and the price is right. This is probably the short shifter to use on a daily driver. I will say, that it is 100% possible to install this without dropping the exhaust and driveshaft, but you will be cussing. Dropping the exhaust and driveshaft opens everything up and eliminates having to use all sorts of extensions and swivels to get everything to work. Use the Ford Racing short shifter instructions for dropping these two bits.

What a difference
I recently purchased and had installed the Steeda short throw shifter in my '15 5.0. What a difference. The shifts feel tighter and gives the car a whole new feel. After reading some of the other reviews, I'm definitely thinking of now adding the trans bushing and shifter bushing. Thanks for such great products!!

Shifter fess so much tighter now
Looks the same for the most part but the stock shifter sticks up a little bit higher. Any way the install was straight forward until getting to the part where you need to go under the car. Follow instructions though and just have a little patience as getting to the part you need to access can be tricky. Just need a few extensions and universal joints. Any how once installed the shifter itself is definitely quality. The sloppiness of the stock shifter is drastically reduced and feels so much tighter now. I like it and enjoy the improvement.

The throws are shorter, and much more crisp
Installed the steeda trans bushing, shifter bushing, and short shifter this morning. For about $200, you can't beat it. I don't notice any additional V/H at all. I do notice that the throws are shorter, and much more crisp. There's a tiny bit of wiggle in it, but it's very firm if your slamming through the gears. I do hear the motor and transmission more in the cabin now due to the tranny bushing, but I don't care at all. Mustang noises are welcome. Lol.

The throws are noticeably shorter
Purchased and received this short throw lever last week, and Installed it over the weekend. Took about 2 hours to finish the install. The throws are noticeably shorter, and 2nd and 4th gear are less awkward to engage and disengage since its more centered when do to less travel. Def worth the labor, and isnt to difficult to execute. Just be careful w the shifter boot trim.
