At Steeda: We Race – You Win

What differentiates Steeda Autosports from most other manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of performance parts and accessories is that we are on the racetrack almost every weekend – actively testing and validating our parts and vehicles and showcasing that at Steeda – Speed Matters. From racetracks, to dragstrips, and even “unofficially” at the occasional stop light, we believe that you have to actively need to live and breathe motorsports to have the credibility one needs in this business today to design, manufacture and sell performance parts and accessories.

Proving this point, this past weekend was just one example of how on most weekends, racetracks all around America are filled with with Steeda prepared vehicles, and with vehicles that use Steeda performance parts. Additinally, many of our close friends and our employees are out there racing, showcasing that we indeed are very serious about Ford performance.

The NMRA Spring Break Shootout this past weekend at the Bradenton Motorsports Park in Bradenton Florida started the 2013 drag racing season with plenty of excitement and fanfare. With perfect weather and packed stands, Scott Boda – Steeda’s Director of Manufacturing took his red Steeda equipped 1990 Mustang LX to Bradenton and ran the fastest time ever in his car, 8.79@155mph with a 1.34 sixty foot on the back tires!! There was no doubt that the Steeda suspension system was definitely working out there this weekend as Scott’s times were good enough for him to finish in 1st place in the 9 second bracket and 4th overall in Tremec True Street against some more powerful cars. It was the largest True street field ever for Bradenton with 117 cars!

Also at the NMRA Event, Steeda customer Chris Parisi stated the season perfectly by winning the Tremec True Street Class with his 2007 Steeda equipped V6 Mustang. With over 149,000 miles on the odometer, this car is Chris’ daily driver and he races it whenever he can in the NMRA Series. Over the years, Chris has been able to sharpen his skills and greatly improve his consistency in competition. An example of that is his killer launch times of .014 in qualifying and .012 in the first round. Suffice to say, Chris is starting the season strong by winning his class and we are hopeful once again this year that Chris will also win his class championship one more time!

Steeda/Nitto Tire driver John Urist of Albuquerque, New Mexico was competing at the NMRA event in the Street Outlaw class. Running a 94mm turbo in the nose of his car, he was able to make it thru three rounds of eliminations, going into the final round. When all was said and done, John had an amazing run of 7.424 at 192.06mph, but even that was not good enough as he finished a very close second by a blink of an eye.

Palm Beach International Raceway in Florida was also very busy this past weekend with The Florida Region of the SCCA racing and also the South Atlantic Road Racing Championship’ (SARRC) Series there with a ‘double event”. Each morning had its own qualifying session, followed by a 30 minute race in the afternoon.
There was also a separate 90 minute Enduro Race on Saturday afternoon that featured mandatory pit stops and driver changes.

For SCCA event, our own Steeda Sales Professional Rod Wiliamson brought out his Steeda equipped 1994 Mustang Cobra for a weekend of racing excitement. Competing against other Mustangs and Camaros in the American Sedan Class, Rod was able to finesse his car and finish in 1st place in his class on Saturday and also 1st place on Sunday. Not bad for the cars first season outing of the year!

For the Enduro portion of the Palm Beach International Raceway event, our own Glen Vitale, Steeda Autosport’s Vice President of Operations was there to represent Steeda. Glen is no stranger at the racetrack, he has been racing for over 24 years and when he is not directing the operations at Steeda, he is usually behind the wheel of one of his cars. This time he left his Steeda Certified GT500 and the Steeda Q650 race cars in the barn, and took out his Steeda prepared 1990 Mazda Miata out for some enduro fun around the challenging track. In qualifying he realized that he was spinning the right rear tire on hard right hand turns causing him to lose some drive coming out of the corners hurting his speed on the ensuing straightaways – a sure sign of a differential problem. Even with this problem, Glen and his car were still good enough to qualify not only 1st in his class but 1st overall for the endurance race.

Glen knew going into the 1.5 hour race that he could win not only his class but he could capture the overall win if the cars differential stayed together. When the race started he maintained his lead on the start and led the pack for the 1st lap. On the 2nd lap the 2nd place car, trying very hard to match his corner speed, ended up going off track, hitting the wall and destroying the left front corner of their car. This brought out a caution to clean up the remnants of his car and allowed Glen to take it easy on the wounded differential. When the race went back to green he managed maintained a steady pace, 1st place in class but he fell to 2nd place overall. With 30 minutes left the 1st place overall car ended up on the side of the track broken, and a car spun causing a full-course caution. With the entire pack now on Glen’s bumper, when the green flag dropped, it was a dash to the finish with the lead he had built up essentially gone. Suddenly, his battery light was on indicating that the alternator was not charging. Turning off his cool suit and race radio, he conserved his electrical load putting all available juice to power his ignition. When the checkered flag dropped – Glen was 1st in class and 1st overall – beating 21 rivals and making him undefeated in his class at PBIR for the last four enduro races held there.

Congratulations to all of the racers that fly the Steeda colors and trust us for their performance needs.

Pony Wars: A Showcase of American Pride

The 4th Annual Pony Wars event exceeded expectations once again this year with a tremendous outpouring of the best pony cars from Ford, Chevrolet, and Mopar. Conceived as the ultimate pony car showdown, the annual Pony Wars event – sponsored by Steeda Autosports and LSR Performance – brought together performance loving gear-heads from all around to enjoy a weekend of car shows, drag racing and pure automotive excitement.

With exceptionally strong attendance, the event most certainly had something for everyone. It all started on Friday evening at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Valdosta Georgia when the octane faithful showed up for a car show, dinner, and a few “red pops” – all in preparation for the main event the following day at Steeda Autosports and at the South Georgia Motorsports Park.

On Saturday morning, Steeda Autosports President Dario Orlando hosted a facility tour at their Valdosta facility, showcasing their ISO 9001:2008 Certified manufacturing processes and also providing some insight on how Steeda supports the performance needs of Ford vehicle owners with products proudly designed, engineered, and manufactured here in the USA. In depth discussions and behind the scenes tours provided insight about our world-class CNC milling & machining capabilities, computerized hardened steel tube bending, TIG welding operations, component fabrication, high temperature powder coating operations, product assembly and packaging, and warehousing operations.

Following the facility tour, the City of Valdosta’s finest – the Valdosta Police, brought out one of their big guns from their fleet, a specially prepared Steeda Police Interceptor Mustang, and led a 1.5 mile long procession of Pony Cars to the South Georgia Motorsports Park. These Steeda Police Interceptors normally see high-speed highway patrol and specialized pursuit service, but this time a Steeda Police Interceptor was used to lead the Pony War attendees in their processional drive. Taking the scenic way to the motorsports facility, the procession vehicles were treated to some really great roads that provided the winding and twisting that made for a really enjoyable drive.

Once at the motorsports facility, both Jackie Jones Ford and Stingray Chevrolet had displays that showcased their performance cars and each had their event staffs available to provide sales support to all of the event attendees. Jackie Jones Ford, an official Steeda Serialized Dealer, also brought a new Steeda vehicle to showcase and sell – a beautiful 2013 Steeda Q350, awaiting a new proud owner!

There was special parking for the Pony Wars Car Show, where tons of vehicles were on display – all showcasing the personal attention to modifications and detailing that make American Pony Cars stand out in the crowd. After the judging was completed, the following owner cars received special recognition for their award winning rides:

  1. Chester Speed: 1971 Mach 1 Mustang
  2. Chester Speed: 1970 Mach 1 Mustang
  3. Randy Thomas: 2010 GT500

  1. Clint Symons: 2012 Supercharged V6 Camaro
  2. Robert Schultz: 2013 Camaro SS
  3. Alex Franklin: 2010 Camaro SS

  1. Adam Parker: 1972 Charger

Best in Show

  1. Willard Nipper: 1968 Camaro

For those that were more inclined for some racing, the dragstrip action was non-stop. It all started with a test and tune session where you could prep your ride and dial it in for the days action. Next up was what is called “Grudge Racing”, where cars line up against each other for a blast down the ¼ mile asphalt. You could race against your buddy’s car, a vehicle you wanted to challenge to race, or just face off against a random vehicle…..they key idea is to have some fun and see what you and your car can do. After about 3 hours of the Grudge, cars were then divided into three categories base on their quickest runs of the day, for the next series entitled “Open Comp” drag racing. In this series, cars with times that are relatively close to each other compete in a like class to find the quickest driver/car combo in each group. After several hours of noon stop excitement, it was time to determine the “Quick 8″ – where the eight fastest cars faced off to see who had the bragging rights to the quickest car at the track and who would take home the bragging rights for the fastest. Eventually, Tony Whetstone from Tallahassee piloting his Fox bodied convertible took top honors. With the track preparation perfect, and Tony’s car dialed in, he ran his first ever 8 second pass and continuing running in the 8′s all day long with a best of 8.89 @ 153mph with a remarkable 1.24 short time on drag radials. His launches were spectacular, lifting the front end of his convertible easily off the ground and throwing the weight on his rear tires for maximum taction.

All in all – it was an action packed day of non-stop excitement for everyone. It didn’t matter if you were a spectator, a novice competitor, or a die-hard racer, there was fun and excitement for everyone as we all were paying homage to a uniquely all American icon – the Pony Car.

Needless to say, we are already making plans for the 2014 edition of the Pony Wars, and we have a few ideas to make it even better next year. So start making plans, because it will be here before you know it!

Steeda Supports Get Your Heart Racing Event

The 2nd Annual Henry Ford Hospital Get Your Heart Racing event was once again a huge success – generating hundreds of thousands of dollars for the hospitals Heart and Vascular Institute. This event is held annually on the grounds of the super-secret Ford Motor Company Dearborn Proving Grounds, provides contributors the opportunity to drive on various track and surfaces, courses, as well as to experience hot laps with professional drivers in a variety of cars. This year, Steeda Autosports provided various performance parts that were on the one-of-one cars made for the event including the 2013 GT500 auction vehicle and the 2013 Ford Focus that was a door prize at the event.

Additionally, Steeda sponsored driver Dane Moxlow brought his Trenton Forging Boss 302s race car to the event and provided exciting hot laps around the Ford Handling Course. Equipped with a passenger racing seat and a six-point harness, attendees were able to experience first hand what it is like to be driven around the track at racing speeds – effectively getting their hearts racing !

We want to thank Dane Moxlow, Trenton Forging and their entire race team for supporting the Henry Ford Hospital with this remarkable charity event. Plans are underway for the 3rd annual event next year – look for future updates from us about this exciting event next year.

2012 Steeda Stampede Recap

On Saturday September 15th Steeda Auto sports held its 13th annual Steeda Stampede event at our Pompano Beach Headquarters in conjunction with the Fun Ford Weekend at Palm Beach International Raceway. With over 130 cars in attendance and hundreds of people at the event it was once again a huge success with some of the nicest hotrods and greatest enthusiasts in the whole southeast. Thanks to SCT, Tokico, and Nitto for providing great items donated for the raffle which also included Steeda Autosports donated prizes. We had a huge turnout for our annual Frank’s Garage sale. With a line around the building many enthusiasts got some great deals on takeoff parts and blemished items. After a great morning at Steeda it was now time to head out to the Fun Ford Race at Palm Beach International Raceway and see what some of these beautiful rides could do at the track!

The highlight of this year’s Fun Ford event was the Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Magazine “Triathlon”. This unique event saw Mustang owners put their cars to the test in three distinctly different events:

  • Timed Autocross
  • Timed Speed Braking Challenge
  • Low ET Quarter-Mile Drag Race Pass

For this event, we decided it was appropriate to pull the cover off of one of our older cars, our 2005 “Screaming Yellow” Q650 that served as a mule in past years for testing and developing many of our performance parts for the S197 Mustang. While this car might be over eight years old, we thought it would be appropriate to showcase how an older 4.6L based Mustang GT that we modified back then, can compete effectively and hold its own against even the newest generation Mustangs and other specialty purpose built cars.

The Triathlon’s rules required that the same driver must handle the car for each event – so we relied on our own drag racer Scott Boda to pilot the Screaming Yellow Q-650. When the dust settled, Scott took home the overall top honors for his class at the event with a 1st place in the speed braking event, a 1st place finish in the drag race portion, and a close 3rd place showing in the auto cross event. Overall, Scott and our “Screaming Yellow” Q650 were able to bring home the 1st Place Overall Win in the highly competitive Modified Group Class and he did this in a 3800lb street car that is fully optioned out with leather interior and other luxury appointments and with all suspension and engine pieces right out of the Steeda Catalog!

In the timed speed braking challenge, Scott achieved a time of 11.97 seconds to go from a dead stop – accelerating up to 115+ MPH at the 1,000 foot mark, and then stopping in a 20×20 box all on Nitto NT05R drag radial tires and NT01s up front. His performance earned him the best time overall for this portion of the event beating all other competitors. On the Drag Racing portion of the Triathlon, with 3 round robin passes and no cool down he managed a 11.44, 11.42, and a best of 11.32 at over 126 miles per hour. These times were around three quarters of a second better than his closest competitor. And finally in the Triathlon’s Auto Cross event, he was able to wrestle this street car to a 3rd place finish, against cars with full roll cages and complete road racing suspension. Not bad for a guy who spends most his time going in a straight line down the quarter mile dragstrip!

Plans are already being made for next year’s Steeda Stampede which we are confident will be even bigger and better once again. Keep up with all our upcoming events by sign
