Dario Orlando’s Vehicles of Choice

Dario Orlando, President of Steeda Autosports is a diehard supporter of Ford Motor Company and an avid performance enthusiast. This is not only exemplified in the performance business he founded over 20 years ago – but also in the vehicles he personally drives. In particular, there are three special vehicles he favors to drive depending if he is commuting to work, driving for pleasure, or racing at speed around the track. These same three vehicles are available today for those lucky enough to purchase them at select Ford dealers nationwide.

Commuting to Work

For driving to work everyday, Dario’s choice is the hot 2008 Steeda Fusion that was initially shown at the 2007 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Best described as an all American Grand Touring sedan, it has been modified by the Steeda Team to be further refined, faster, and better balanced so that it delivers more excitement and automotive pleasure than anything else in it’s class – and at a price that most everyone can afford.

Providing four door access and comfortable seating, the Steeda Fusion is a practical family sedan that has been modified to appeal to the die-hard performance enthusiast that demands and needs more than just a typical family sedan. With outstanding fuel economy and shocking performance, the Steeda Fusion is the perfect ride to end that oftentimes-boring commute to work!

To start off, the Steeda engineers have enhanced the Fusion with suspension modifications, including Steeda Sport Springs, that improve the ride and handling but not at the expense of ride quality and comfort. Steeda has designed a proprietary strut tower brace that assists in the elimination of body flex during periods of aggressive cornering.

Dario favors the Nitto Invo performance tires which offer superior wet and dry traction while maintaining a very quiet and smooth ride.

The Steeda Fusion engine performance is dramatically improved with the addition of the Steeda designed and engineered cold air system and Borla free flowing exhaust system. The result is improved performance with a pleasing, yet purposeful sound.

The Steeda Q650R is equipped with a Tremec TKO600 transmission and a Steeda Remote Tri-Ax Shifter which is designed specificly to work with the S197 body style.

Getting To Know Steeda Wheels

It is no secret that upgrading your vehicle’s wheels is one of the simplest ways to change the look of your car and also to improve its road manners. However the wheel marketplace can be very confusing today as to what is the choice one should make, as there are literally thousands of options available to consumers today and even thousands more opinions from others on what to buy. At Steeda Autosports, we take the guesswork out of the process by producing a comprehensive line of wheels that are designed and manufactured under the highest engineering and manufacturing standards today. When combined with our performance tire selections from Nitto, you are guaranteed the best wheel and tire combinations available today – PERIOD!

We do not take our wheels and tires lightly at Steeda. Not only does the wheel have to look “just right” – but it must perform, and perform like no other. The key Steeda difference is that our wheels are specifically designed, engineered, and manufactured for a specific intent and for a specific vehicle using 3d CAD software and analyzed with FEA software. Key factors we look at in our wheel designing /engineering process include (but are not limited to):

  • Correct wheel/hub offsets
  • Clearance for OEM and most aftermarket brake kits
  • Brake clip clearances
  • Optimized weight and strength with optimized pocketing design
  • Brake cooling optimized for operation under harsh race conditions

Realizing that weight is the enemy of speed and handling, we use some of the finest materials in our wheels (A356.2 grade Aluminum), and then low pressure cast them for increased strength and reduced weight. Many others gravity cast their wheels – a far cheaper process that adds weight and result in a weaker wheel. After being cast, our wheels are heat-treating to 82.5 Rockwell E and then precision CNC machined with CAD/CAM software before receiving a specialized coating under a German Wagner paint line.

Next our wheel designs are then thoroughly tested for both track and street use under a variety of industry and proprietary testing techniques that includes (but are not limited to):

  • 13 degree impact resistance
  • 30 degree impact resistance
  • Cornering fatigue
  • Radial fatigue
  • X-ray inspection
  • Air leak inspection
  • Rockwell hardness

The end result – wheels that are made under some of the highest standards and are certified for use under the most aggressive street, track, dragstrip conditions you will experience. All of our wheels are produced under strict certifications / standards including: ISO9001, ISO 7141, QS9000, TS16949, JWL, TUV, and the US Department of Transportation (DOT).

Once you get your wheels, then you must have the best tires on the market to complete your performance package. We have tested all of the high performance brands in the market today, and recommend only Nitto tires for those that want the best performance for their vehicle. Check with your Steeda Sales Professional for their recommendation of the specific Nitto tires for your purpose.

John Urist Joins Team Steeda

Three time NMRA National Champion and World Street Challenge Champion John Urist has joined the Steeda Autosports racing stable. Racing in the wild NMRA Super Street Outlaw class, John is now flying the Steeda colors on his 1993 Mustang LX Coupe. Powered with a 420 CID Windsor engine with over 35 PSI of hard charging forced induction, John’s Mustang puts out an estimated 2000 horsepower…..enough gallop power to propel his pony down the quarter mile in 7.40 seconds at over 193 miles per hour.

“With the outstanding relationship I have with NITTO Tires, it was only natural that I should align myself with the world leader in Ford performance – Steeda Autosports”, commented John. “They are the largest manufacturer of Ford performance equipment in the World and really know what performance is about, it is in their DNA”.

Currently in first place in the Super Street Outlaw class, John is looking for his new relationship with Steeda Autosports to propel him to his 3rd consecutive and 4th overall National Championship this season.

The very first race John participated in after joining forces with Steeda Autosports just happened to be the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing (July 17-20, 2008) in Joliet, Illinois. Nothing like starting in a big way – John finished 1st – outrunning everyone in the Super Street Outlaw class and adding yet another victory to the long list of Steeda’s accomplishments.

Tom Ellis & Steeda Score BIG !

Tom Ellis driving his Steeda prepared Mustang finds himself in the inevitable position of is currently leading the points in the Southeast Division of the SCCA for the National Title of the American Sedan class. This season has been an especially good one for Tom and his Steeda pony – having set another new track record, this time at the famed at Daytona International Raceway.

In his last race at the Double National at Roebling Road, Tom continued his torrid winning pace this season by capturing the pole position not once, but twice for each of the races that weekend, and then he went on to win each race far out performing all other competitors.

In his next race at Carolina Motorsports Park, Tom is hoping for yet another win to lock up the his series championship for the 2008 season as a prelude to hopefully clinch the National SCCA Championship in the Topeka, Kansas series.

Tom’s #51 Steeda Mustang continues to be the car to beat as it always seems to outshine the competition with it’s superior handling and performance.

Burnett Racing Continues to Dominate

At the NASA Mid-Ohio Series (July 12-13, 2008) the Burnett Racing Team and their Steeda Mustangs continued their winning ways at a rain soaked NASA event. Even extreme weather would not prevent young hot shoe Rusty Ferguson from taking the American Iron Extreme (AIXextreme ) win on Saturday with Elliot Fisher in 2nd, in another Burnett Racing Steeda Mustang. Two drivers, and a 1 -2 podium finish for Steeda. This is an especially great achievement when you consider that the Steeda cars were American Iron class vehicles racing other cars that were competing against American Iron Extreme class. Even with more horsepower provided to the other vehicles by nature of their class specifications, the other cars could not beat the Burnett / Steeda Racing Team!

On Sunday, with clear blue skies over the challenging Mid-Ohio track, team leader Robin Burnett in his race was able to capture the pole position and then turn back all other competitors as he went on to drive away with another American Iron win in his #21 Steeda Mustang.

Congratulations to the Burnett / Steeda Racing Team as they continue to outperform and tear up the competition again this season!

Jim Breese Launches an Attack

So far this drag racing season Jim Breese has taken his Steeda pony to the finals 3 out of 4 races this year. Currently positioned second in the overall point competition and hard charging for that #1 position in points, Jim has re-dialed in his car for the NMRA mid-season rule change that provided him a 100 pound weight disadvantage compared to non-modular engine powered cars, and is more than ready to defend his honor at the next NMRA event is in two weeks in Atco, New Jersey.

Jim is a fierce competitor in the NMRA drag racing circuit with his Steeda equipped Mustang and will be going all out to win. With his strong winning desire combined with his keen sense and lightning quick reflexes, look for Jim to be a definite threat to all other competitors for the remainder of the season at the dragstrip.

The superiority of Steeda Autosports parts were once again proven at the KONI Challenge Series on July 20th at Barber Motorsports Park. Steeda equipped Mustangs filled the podium with a brilliant 1-2-3 podium finish against a field of BMWs, Porsches, and other race prepared Mustangs in this hotly contested and very popular series.

All top three Mustangs were equipped with the Steeda rear wing (p/n 307-0009) that is specifically engineered for the S197 Mustang unique vehicle aerodynamics – this same rear wing is available for you to buy for your Mustang today!

Strategically placed into the airstream, at speed this spoiler creates significant down-force that not only enhances vehicle handling and traction, but also overall vehicle performance. Modeled after an actual inverted airplane wing, this wing has been thoroughly wind tunnel tested and is designed specifically for the 2005-2009 Mustang — It is this same wing that is standard equipment on EVERY Steeda Q-Series Mustang we build.

Steeda/Whipple Superchargers Outperform All Others

If you want maximum horsepower and performance, then the Steeda/Whipple Gen II Supercharger system, the most efficient supercharger system available in the market today, is your ticket to “Life in the Fast Lane”. When combined with the all new and industry leading Steeda Adaptive Performance Calibration the result is the BEST performance powertrain available for Ford performance enthusiasts today – period! Built undercover by the renown “Skunk Works Team” at Steeda Autosports, the Q650R will serve as a rolling test bed for continuing refinement and development of our track tested and race proven performance parts and accessories – just another example of how Steeda Autosports continually pushes the envelope of Mustang performance for it’s performance craving customers.

On the outside, the Q650R is outfitted on the outside with Steeda’s aerodynamic Race Wing that stands tall at a full-race height and gets into the airstream and creates significant down-force to enhance handling and traction. Modeled after an actual inverted airplane wing, this wing has been thoroughly tested in the wind tunnel and is designed specifically for the Mustang. Added to the front is our fully functional competition front fascia that is designed for improved high speed stability as well as improved cooling of the engine and brakes under harsh race conditions it will be operated under.

Under the hood, the 4.6L engine is equipped with the Steeda/Whipple supercharger system and tuning is handled by our industry unique Adaptive Performance Calibration – the end result….650 horsepower of heart pounding excitement with “live” – automatic computerized tuning as it is raced. This adaptive system will always optimize the engine’s power output so that the maximum amount of power is always available, no matter how severe the race conditions may become.

Inside the Steeda Tri-Ax Remote Racing Shifter (fully adjustable in length and height), makes it perfect for varying drivers and driving styles as it provides an extremely short throw with precise action needed for the race track.

Under the car is where some really advanced Steeda suspension technology is deployed. From the advanced adjustable full coil over suspension system, our proprietary Watt’s Linkage, to our D Spec Shocks and bump steer kit, the entire catalog of Steeda’s superior suspension parts – and some extra experimental suspension enhancements as well – have been integrated into this car so as to make it the BEST HANDLING car we have ever driven on a race track.

We have outfitted Forgeline 18×9.5 (front) and 18×11 (rear) wheels and shod them naturally with the best track tires you can buy……Nitto’s famed NT01 high performance tires (275/35-18 in the front and massive 315/30-18 in the rear). These tires are mandatory for a high performance vehicle like this racer and provide the grip our suspension enhancements demand.

To provide the required force to bring 650 horsepower to a halt, we have stuffed our Steeda powerful 14” front and 13” rear braking system behind the wheels. These brakes, specially tuned for the S197 Mustang Anti-Lock brake system, provide the necessary force to keep this wild horse under control under severe race conditions it will surely encounter.
